Rosie H, Head of FP&A

Our Suggested Solution....

AARS 3: How To Make That Accountancy Recruitment Decision

Interviewers!

CONGRATULATIONS!

You've made it through the recruitment process and it's time to make that acclaimed accountancy recruitment decision!

By now you should have:

  • a shortlist of hopefully-harmless candidates who can just about muster between them the skills and experience you require;
  • walked a tightrope between keeping your sanity and losing your accounting marbles;
  • aged 10 years

Making the final decision as to which candidate gets to join that jumble of numerate nutters in your office can be difficult.

To help guide you we've compiled a checklist of key questions to ask of each of the contenders.

REMEMBER!: as the footballing accountant would say, they may be the best person for the job but are they the right person for the job?:

GOOD LUCK!

Accountancy Recruitment Decision Checklist

1. Is there a "cultural fit"?

If you want to get your decision past those hooligans in Human Resources then answering this 'Yes' is a must.

Put simply, will the candidate meet your colleagues' expectations?

Put even simpler: Is the candidate a:

  • standard costing STUNNER ?, or a
  • management accounting MUNSTER ??

WARNING: Get this wrong and you will incur the eternal wrath of Barney the Owl.

(for ease of playback, use bottom left control)

Note: you would be wise to learn more about Barney the Owl.

2. How Were They Dressed At Interview?

Eliminate candidates if they were wearing any of the following:

  • brown suit
  • suede shoes
  • slippers or flip flops
  • flippers
  • nothing
  • bell-bottom flares
  • designer calculators
  • strange stains on their trousers
  • offensive accounting tattoos such as "Adverse Variance" or "Control Weakness"

Trust us. They will be more trouble than they're worth!!

3. How Did They Behave At Interview?

Cross from your list any candidates who spent the time:

  • rocking backwards and forwards, humming
  • looking out the window
  • catching up on household admin
  • writing texts
  • standing by the exit
  • clearing out their handbag
  • writing shopping lists
  • trying to remove strange stains from their trousers
  • trying to remove strange stains from your trousers

4. Still Can't Make A Decision?

If you still can't decide between the candidates, why not have a wannabe-style 'Interview Off'?!

Call them into the staff restaurant and have each contestant recite some timeless accounting songs!

Ask some of your work shy accountancy colleagues to come along and vote for the winner!
